The Olympus C 4040 is the first digital camera from Olympus for under $1000 to have 4 Mega Pixel CCD resolution, allowing it to produce high quality images in resolutions up to 2,272 x 1,704 Pixels. The image resolution is large enough to allow printing in enlarged print sizes of up to 11 x 14 inches, in photographic quality. The camera has an 'Interpolation mode' that actually increases the image resolution even higher to 3,200 x 2,400. Interpolated images do suffer some loss in quality and aren't comparable to the quality of the same resolution non interpolated image. Being able to interpolate an image slightly can still be a valuable feature for those that demand maximum print size or image cropping options. The camera's lens is the same used in the popular Olympus C 3040 digital camera, a very high quality lens featuring a 3X (35 - 105mm) zoom lens, which has a low F 1.8 rating giving good low light performance. The lens also has a macro function for close up photography with a minimal focusing distance of 20cm. (8 Inches) The macro function falls short of the performance of other cameras such as the Nikon Coolpix 995 with a minimal focal distance of just 2cm or 0.8 Inch. High end Olympus digital cameras have made themselves a reputation for being fast and having smaller delay times than many other digital cameras. The speed of the camera makes it feel more like a traditional 35mm camera to use and more effective at capturing action shots and consecutive images. The C 4040 features a large memory buffer that temporarily stores the image data coming from the CCD, while waiting for the camera to process the data and store it to the Smart Media card.. This feature allows for rapid shooting of several consecutive images with little delay from one shot to the next. Aperture and shutter priority modes, selectable metering options, plus full manual focus control are all available, making the camera almost as versatile as a SLR 35mm camera.
